Industries in Alibaug have flourished since ancient times. Salt making and cottage industries are ancient and traditional businesses here. A lot of goods were exported from Chaul, Mahad, Goregaon, Rajpuri port. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj started the shipbuilding business, which was later carried on by Kanhoji Angre. The business of silk and cotton cloth has been going on since Mughal and Portuguese times. Later it gradually decreased. According to a reference from 1840, there were skilled artists who weaved pitambar at Revdanda.
Later in 1897, rice milling was started.In the pre-independence period industrialization was slow but after independence it got a boost. Panvel has been famous for making bullock cart wheels since last century. The wheels are made from solid teak from the nearby Karnala forest. The wheelwrights here are in demand from Raigad, Satara, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur.
