The coastal town of Chaul is a quiet village with an unexplored coastline and dilapidated monuments. ‘Hamamkhana’ in Chaul is one of them. ‘Hamamkhana’ means a royal bathing place for the noble, generally associated with the Islamic world. There are six arch shaped structures. Moving inside, there is a big square shaped hall, approximately, 6 to 7 metres in size. There is a dome placed, roughly, 9.14 metre above the hall. However, now, it is damaged. After examining the ruins, it can be assumed that in its earlier days there was an octagonal fountain in the centre of the hall. A provision for sitting place is in the walls facing North, South and East direction. After crossing the narrow zigzag path from its North West corner, there are 2 royal bathrooms to the North direction. Few remains of an old “Asa’ masjid are there to its South.
Before taking the turn for the Hamamkhana, ruins of wall of ‘Hazamkhana’ can be seen to the left of the Shitala Devi temple lane. The connection to the Mughal reign is still visible today due to the presence of these ruins of Hamamkhana, Hazamkhana, Asa Masjid, Graveyard reflecting Mughal architecture.
