Padmadurg fort is located in the deep sea near Murud village. The nuisance of the Siddis in the “Janjira” fort was increasing on the Konkan coast. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built the fort “Padmadurg” on this rocky island in the sea of Murud to control the sea movements of Siddi. Marathi mavals built this fort by fighting with Siddi.

The History :-

Chatrapati Maharaja around 1670s campaigns were planned to capture the Janjira of Siddi. In this, Moropant Pingle, the local Fishermen Lai Patil and their warriors played a very brave role. During the reign of Sambhaji Maharaj, Padmadurg was in Swarajya. Even after the death of Sambhaji Maharaj in 1680, it is mentioned in the British letter that this fort was under the control of the Marathas. After that Padmadurga was taken over by Siddhi. The Marathas conquered it back during the Peshwa period.

About the Fort :-

“Padmadurg” fort has two parts. A main fort and adjacent in front of it. Padkot has largely disappeared, but the ramparts of the main fort are still intact. A large tower in front of the main door stands strong. The upper part of this fort looks like a blooming lotus petal. That is why it was named as Padmadurga. A feature of the construction of this fort can be seen here. The construction is made by filling lime between the two stones of the embankment. In the main fort one can see square well, canons, & remains of buildings.

One has to climb four-five steps to enter the Main Door of Padmadurga. On the inner side of the door there are space guards. There is also a stairway leading to the shore of the fort. In the middle part, the ruins of old and new structures can be seen. While there is salt water on all four sides, there are four tanks inside for fresh water. Janjira and Samrajgad forts can be seen from the ramparts of this fort. Also, the coast of Murud can be seen very well from here.

How to reach:

There is a road from Murud village to Rajapuri to reach Padmadurga. There is a village near the creek on this road and you can reach the fort from the Khora Jetty. Fishermen take boats to the fort after observing the sea and the weather. The fort is under the control of the Navy. So need permission to go there.
