As you visit Alibaug taluka to enjoy the serene beaches, make sure you have a glimpse of its important historical places also. While travelling from Chaul village to Vave village, you will come across Someshwar temple, adobe of Lord Shiva. A few steps ahead, a mansion constructed from stone and lime can be seen along the road. The mansion reflects the Islamic architecture style. However, now it is in poor condition. This mansion or ‘Kalavantin wada’ is located in Sarai village. Sarai means a resting place for travelers and caravans.
The History –
Earlier during the reign of Siddhi, ‘kalavantin’ were a group of women wanderers who used to sing and dance for livelihood. This mansion was built for their stay and performances. It has 3 arch shaped structures made of stone and 3 dome shaped structures made of bricks. The structure of the left side to the main entrance has collapsed. The assembly hall or the auditorium has 3 domes. Large space is provided in the walls to light the lamp on its two sides. There is a stone staircase near to it which implies that the monument was more than a single storey structure. The repair work has been carried for its walls. Opposite to the staircase, lies a construction similar to a staircase. However its confirmation is difficult due to the pile of heavy stones in front of it.
To the west of Kalavantin wada, were walls constructed 50 foot wide and 70 foot in length, which are destroyed. There is a structure of 3 arch shaped structures made of stone and 3 dome shaped structures made of bricks, just 50 meters away from the walls. As you move on, you will come across the remains of an old mosque. Behind it is a beautiful lake. Though the place is in demolished condition, it is worth visiting. Historical places give us the chance to time travel and pull back the curtain on a different age.
