Aakshi is an important village of ‘Angrekalin Ashtagar’ in Alibaug taluka. Aakshi pillar is located on the Alibaug – Revdanda road. Take a turn from the pillar to reach Aakshi village. The Aakshi pillar has become an identity of Aakshi village. The Sakharkhadi Bridge in Aakshi, plays an important role in joining the Northern and Southern parts of Alibag taluka.
The Akshi Pillar Construction-
The Akshi Pillar is a memorial built to cherish the memories of constructing this bridge. The message inscribed on the pillar is as follows:
“In the year 1928, Dr. Vinayak Krishna Dongre and Mr. Dinkar Krishna Dongre, residents of Aakshi village gave the amount of Rs 50,000/- (charging an interest of 2.5%) through which this work was initiated. The plan was prepared under the able guidance of ex-President of the board, Mr Sitaram Vishwanath Tilak and Solicitor of Mumbai, M Solomon Moses Wakrulkar. Mr. Ganesh Chintamani Dandekar from Revdanda and M Khan Bahamun Muhammad Inus, President of the law Board, Alibaug provided their supervision for construction of the road. Dr. Dongre, President of the board ensured the completion of the project smoothly. Karmaveer Srimant Sardar Chandrojirao Sambhajirao Aangre, Gwalior resident, laid the foundation stone on 25 th January 1931. The completion ceremony for the project took place on 27 February 1932 and was graced by Shri Jagadguru Shri Shankaracharya (Dr. Kurtakoti).”
The names of the people who generously donated for the project are mentioned on the pillar. The pillar, made up of stone is triangular in shape. There are inscriptions engraved on marble on its 3 sides.
