Jackfruit

When you think of Konkan you think of a few selective fruits, one of which is the Jackfruit. Alibag and the region around you will find a lot of these trees. It may look thorny and prickly outside but it is sweet and nutritious inside. You will always stumble upon at least one tree in the coconut groves. It flowers generally from winter to early onset of winter.

There mainly two types of fruit u2013 Barka and Kapa. The seeds of the Barka fruit are very soft hence it is used to prepare long lasting food items like Jackfruit-Pancake (a type of pancake made of processed pulp) and Jackfruit vadi (steamed jackfruit rice cake).

The Kapa seeds can be eaten raw and are very tasty. It can also be used to prepare a vegetable delicacy. Long lasting products as dried chips, pancake are sold in the local markets and very popular with the tourists.

The wood of a the tree is very hard and is generally used to make du00e9cor or show items.
