Many Buddhist caves, Inscriptions and Tamrapatras (copperplate engravings) in and around Alibaug indicate the cultural heritage. Marathi literature has a very ancient heritage as some old inscriptions are found near Alibaug. A nine-line inscription at Akshi in Alibaug taluka dated to 934 AD. Year 1012 is considered to be the earliest inscription in Marathi. Like the inscriptions, the credit of the first copper plate goes to Raigad district. In the later period, Shri Dasbodh Scripture written by Samarth Ramdas in “Shivthar ghal” (ghal means cavern) of Raigad district. As the major places in Angrean Ashtagara were located in Alibag and its surroundings, many types of texts were written here even during Shivaji Maharaj’s time. During this period Marathi language dictionary, Marathi grammar and other textbooks were produced. Nagaon and Pen were centres of learning during the Maratha and Peshwa period. In the later pre-independence period, the literature and library resources here flourished with many school textbooks, reference books, theses, newspapers, etc.
