Phansad Wildlife Census

Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary – A nature and biodiversity rich sanctuary in Murud taluka. Being very hot summer in Urban cities, the weather in PhansadSansctuary was very pleasant. The thick bushes, the cool summer wind accompanied by the chirping of various birds, the animal and bird lovers from different parts of Maharashtra, and the arrangements made by the locals and forest officials, the scaffolding built by a month of hard work near the small water lakes – all are unforgettable and must be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

Wild Animal Bird Census -

Every year in the month of May, on Buddha Purnima, animals and birds are counted at various places across India. During this full moon, the moonlight is more abundant, so even in the darkness of night, these wildlife can be seen.   This counting is very important for the conservation of animals and birds. This gives us important information about a large number of animals and birds, their habits, migrations, increasing or decreasing numbers, etc.

Nature Experience Program 2024-25

The event gets organized every year by the forest officials of Phansad Forest Sanctuary on behalf of the government. As a part of this, the alibagonline team also participated in animal census at Phansad this year. As this news came a month in advance, various animal and bird lovers registered their names. As planned on 23rd May, everyone gathered near the main entrance at Supegaon of Phansad. Later, Forest Range Officer Mr. Tushar Kalbhor and his full team took charge of the program. After the introduction about the program, everyone was introduced. And 13 groups were formed, one forest guard to each group, and a watershed/Gaan assigned to them. As the water in the lake decreases during the summer days, small artificial water bodies are created here at many places, and water is added to them every alternate day.

After the evening tea, all the teams went to their assigned places, taking the dinner boxes with them. A sheet for animal enumeration was also provided. The next program was to sit overnight on a platform built atop tree near the water body and record the animal sightings as well as the sounds of various birds. The most important thing is that no matter how talkative you are, here you don’t have to utter a word, and possibly not even move. Because some small wild animals are likely to move away after hearing your voice and movement.

Rich nature experience

We went to Bhandavacha Maal. It was a large open area around with dry grass, and forest on all sides. If an animal comes, it will immediately come into view. The sky was a bit cloudy. As the sun began to set, the sounds of various birds could be heard, occasionally a langur would cry out. As the scaffolding was on an anjani tree, a sparkling firefly would pay a surprise visit. Away from the daily hustle and bustle of life, tonight we were in a forest, that too sitting on a platform, completely in the vicinity with nature. The experience was fantastic. After living in Alibaug for so many years, we were experiencing the forest, nature and wild life here for the first time. Around 9 pm the moon started to appear, the atmosphere was a bit cloudy and the moonlight was also hiding. Our focus was on the nearby waterfront. Two black figures were seen coming from open area around 11 pm. After coming a little closer, we realized that it was a pair of deers. After a while, the pair disappeared into the nearby bushes, probably because they saw our movement. The sounds of various birds continued continuously, the forest guard Mr. Madhukar Naik who was with us also gave us a lot of information. In the middle of the night, the noise of the birds died down a bit and there was a pindrop silence. An owl would make a sound from within. All the sounds of the birdsheard were recorded in the sheet, at about 5 in the morning sunlight appeared in the east, and then the chirping of the birds began again. The birds at night were different and the chirping birds of the morning are different. Everything here was different to us, but it was the real home of those birds, wild animals. Later we got down from the platform around 6 and came back by taking fantastic nature walk. Various birds, spiders, monkeys were seen on the way. Many thanks to Forest Range Officer Mr. Tushar Kalbhor and his entire team for organizing this event perfectly.
