Variety of fish are available at different seasons. Different fish are found in Alibag sea on different days. Generally Paplet, Prawns, Surmai, Ravas, Jitada, etc. are found here. A variety of fishes are found in abundance. These and many other fishes contain many essential nutrients such as calcium, vitamins, proteins and omega-3 carbohydrates. These essentials further encourage fish lovers. As Alibag enjoys a beach, clean and fresh fish is available in abundance here. Due to this availability and different spices, along with traditional food types, new recipes are also popular here.
Fishing –
Due to the deep sea that Alibaug enjoys, the fishermen community do a lot of fishing here. Fishing harbours develop where the sea water enters the land to form a bay-like area. And it is from there that big boats leave for fishing and fish are landed back here. The fish are sent to local markets and different places. Fishermen community lives near this port and it is called Koliwada here. There are such ports at Alibaug and nearby Varsoli, Thal, as well as at Murud – Revdanda, Theronda, Murud, Rajpuri. Good quality fish caught during fishing are supplied to the market while some smaller fish are dried in the sun. Big grounds are prepared near the harbor to dry these fish. Such dried fish are also in high demand in the market.
Fishing Business –
Fishing is a major secondary occupation in the district, with approximately 240 km of coastline available for fishing. More than a hundred villages near the sea and creeks are involved in this business. There are about 40 fishing centres in Raigad district. Fish caught from Alibaug and nearby ports are supplied to different cities of Maharashtra. There are five fishing divisions in Mora – Karanja, Alibag, Revdanda, Murud and Shrivardhan. As good quality fish is available here, the market price is also good. The fish caught from the boats are kept here in different types of beverages and are loaded into big trucks and supplied to other cities. The dried fish here is also very famous, the dried fish are sent to other cities in large quantities through different traders.
